something new

I haven't done the blogging thing well yet. I've tried before, but it never quite took.

I was thinking the other day about my job as a pastor. My husband is a pastor too, and together we pastor a smallish church. We love our job, and feel very blessed to get up and do something we love every day!

However, some of the time, we feel like we are weird, radical, and like no one "gets us." We love to read the Bible and discover new and interesting things. We have great conversations between the two of us, but then we get to church and people look at us like we're aliens.

The problem is, the congregation we pastor isn't quite ready for some of these perspectives. Now, I don't think we are crazy, these aren't crazy out there ideas--just discipleship, and a radical commitment to follow Jesus. These things we discuss are scriptural, and we have the support of a denomination to back us up. There are checks and balances to make sure pastor's aren't teaching heresy.

So I have begun with this blog for a few reasons.

1. I am a talker (most pastors are). I like to get my ideas and perspectives out there for people to hear and perhaps have a discussion about. This doesn't and cannot always happen at church. Sometimes it seems church goers aren't interested in going deeper (which is a whole other conversation for sometime) So I'm going to broaden my base by trying the bloggy thing.

2. I crave the freedom to be able to say whatever I want, and sometimes shout about what I believe. Again, this cannot always happen in a church setting. As a leader you have to have an understanding of your congregation, and know what they are and are not capable of hearing and internalizing. I can't pelt people with all kinds of info they aren't ready for, but I don't want to forget what I want to say in certain situations. I also want a place where no one knows who I am or what church I pastor, and I just want to be able to talk about some of these ideas. Again, blogging seemed like a logical choice.

We'll see where this goes. Welcome to my journey!
